Cron Atlas

AWS EventBridge cron expressions

Six fields inside cron(…), with a required year, no seconds, and the rule that trips everyone: one of the two day fields must be ?.

Clock changes

In the other dialects

“Same schedule” means the same clock times. Schedulers still treat a clock change differently, as the table on the home page shows.

Keyboard: / edit the expression, 1 to 6 change dialect, t time zone, n next clock change, c copy the link, Esc leave a field.

Special characters

?
Any. Required in exactly one of day of month and day of week.
*
All values. It cannot sit in both day fields: if you use it in one, use ? in the other.
/
Increments: 1/10 is minute 1, 11, 21 and so on. Not allowed in day of week.
L
In day of month, the last day of the month. In day of week, the last day of the week. 6L is the last Friday.
W
The weekday closest to a date: 3W.
#
The nth weekday: 3#2 is the second Tuesday. Only one expression is allowed in the field, so 3#1,6#3 is invalid.
rate(5 minutes)
A fixed interval counted from creation. Scheduled rules need the singular unit for a value of 1: rate(1 hour).

The two day fields

You cannot set both day fields. Set one and put ? in the other. 0 12 * * * * looks reasonable and is rejected; 0 12 * * ? * is what you want.

Time zones

Scheduled rules always run in UTC. EventBridge Scheduler takes any IANA zone through --schedule-expression-timezone.

Clock changes

From the Scheduler docs: when clocks go forward, a run at a time that does not exist is skipped. When they go back, it runs once, before the shift, and does not repeat. AWS’s worked example is a fixed daily time, so frequent schedules that repeat through the hour are an inference. rate(1 days) stays a 24-hour duration and drifts against the clock.

Gotchas

  • Days are numbered 1–7 starting on Sunday, so Unix cron’s 1-5 for weekdays means Sunday through Thursday here. Use names, or 2-6.
  • Scheduled rules are a legacy feature, and AWS recommends EventBridge Scheduler. The expression syntax is the same, but only Scheduler has time zones.
  • AWS’s table describes 0/30 20-2 ? * MON-FRI * both as a shift running past midnight and as “12:00 am to 2:00 am on Monday morning”. Each field is matched on its own, so this tool shows the early and the late hours of each selected day. The table also says the window ends at 2:00, while 0/30 in hour 2 also matches 2:30. Check any wrap-around range in the console.
  • AWS documents L and W but not L-3 or LW. They are computed here the way Quartz does and marked as unconfirmed.
  • Rates faster than a minute are not supported, and neither are expressions that resolve to them.
  • Scheduler invokes with 60-second precision: a 1:00 schedule fires between 1:00:00 and 1:00:59.
